GLOBAL TRENDS
The outstanding feature of this summer's stars is the arrival of king-maker and law-giver, Saturn, in the sign of Leo. It has been almost twenty-nine years since Saturn graced this fire sign, and we have roughly two years to discover what this planet can do for us this time around. July 16th is the date Saturn enters Leo, and we can expect to see something in the way of important world events during the last ten days of July and in the middle of September. It is tempting to speculate that Saturn in his role as the Reaper may preside over the departure of one or more monarchs and/or world leaders.
I suspect the world money-markets will be the first to reflect the consolidating nature of Saturn - fears in the US of a bear market may prove grounded, and consumer spending will be on the decrease. However, it will take the full two years, not just this summer, for Saturn to fulfil his promise of getting us to get our accounts back in balance! Governments tend to become more totalitarian under Saturn in Leo, but perhaps we don't need astrology to inform us that our freedoms will be increasingly curtailed.
Saturn's passage through Leo in 1975-1977, synchronized with the fall of Saigon and the departure of the US from Vietnam, thus it is tempting to speculate that during the next two years we shall see the withdrawal of troops from Iraq, and maybe, just maybe, that end-July and mid-September period will produce real evidence of such a development in the future. Twenty-nine years ago much whistle-blowing was going on regarding the abuses of certain intelligence organizations, so the summer could prove fascinating as one scandal after another breaks out in high (or is that low?) places.
Dear little Mercury, the controller of travel and communications, will be in reverse between the 23rd July and 16th August, so getting from one place to another will have its little problems! Whether it is simply a case of too many people trying to get to far-away destinations, events in distant places interfering with travel and transportation or simply the workings of bureaucracy, we will have to be patient.
But before you get the idea that Saturn and the summer are all doom and gloom, there are other factors working to make this part of the year happy and successful. With Jupiter in philanthropic and partner-oriented, Libra, we can look forward to some wonderful weddings, joyful engagements and the resolution of conflicts - we have already seen the progress made on the Israeli-Palestine front, and there could be more good news ahead. A spectacular alignment in place from the end of August to early September could set the stage for breakthroughs and happy announcements.
Also on a lighter note, since Leo and Libra have much to do with style and fashion we should start to see a more tailored look emerging on the cat-walks, and a trend towards the elegant and understated. Burnished gold and the rich autumn colours should be in vogue, and nostalgia for the great era of Hollywood (1940's) could be rife. Perhaps, therefore, the theme of this summer is the way in which the past filters into the present, history repeats itself and a new twist on old tune can be found.
