Penny* Thornton's Cosmic Update
Welcome to the COSMIC UPDATE
This part of my web-site gives you an in-look at the current astrological events. I have tried to make it as readable and useful to astrologers and non-astrologers alike but this may not always be achievable. If you do come across some terms that you do not understand, you should be able to find a definition in the SCIENCE BIT. And, of course, you can always e-mail me directly with your queries and comments.
The announcement that the
General Election would take place on 7th June hardly took Britain by
surprise. Ever since Tony Blair had had to abandon an earlier date of 3 May, due
to the outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease, this June date had been all but in
the bag.
According to all the current
opinion polls and media and political commentators alike, the Election is a
foregone conclusion – a storming victory by the Labour Party.
But does the astrology support
this?
In Talking Cosmic I
have discussed the trend for political reversals, which has been evident in many
General Elections during the last year – Mexico, Canada, USA to name but
three. So could Britain follow suit
and put the Tories back in power?
You don’t need to be a
soothsayer to answer this one. A Tory victory is as remote as the next Ice Age.
However, I do believe the astrology points to a less than overwhelming win for
Labour.

GENERAL ELECTION: 7TH JUNE
2001; 7 00am WESTMINSTER

Enlarged View)
Cancer rising and ruler, the
Moon in perfect trine to an elevated Venus, suggests a win for the home team,
which in this case is Labour.
The Moon in Capricorn, which is
representative of the people of Britain, forming this helpful trine to Venus
suggests that the outcome positively reflects the voice of the people. And,
unlike the recent election debacle in the USA, this chart gives no indication of
a hung parliament and certainly no hanging chads! (Yes, I have noticed
retrograde Mercury, which indicates recounts and delays… of which more later)
In a chart like this where two
parties are involved, the 7th house represents the opposing team. And
with Saturn ruling this house and Neptune in residence, the picture is not a
happy one for the Tories. A debilitating experience and a party in chaos and
despair could fairly sum up the Tory position.
However, Neptune is trine
Saturn so the prospect is not completely gloomy for the Conservatives. Good will
come out of this election in the sense of positive lessons learned and the
Tories will claim back some of the land they lost in the previous election.
The sun is applying to Jupiter
and the Moon is conjunct Mars (yes, I know they are in different signs and the
moon is separating from Mars) but nonetheless a healthy turn out is indicated.
However, this latter aspect combined with the retrograde Mercury, implies some
disagreement and controversy. And since Mercury is closeted in the mysterious 12th
house of the chart, there is a concern for missing votes and serious miscounts.
To counteract this tricky factor Mercury is in its own sign of Gemini, which
strengthens its properties – hence no hanging chands!
So why do I feel there is a
cloud hanging over Labour’s win?
The run up to the Election is
an astrological minefield. On Monday, 4th Mercury turns retrograde
and the sun opposes Pluto. On Wednesday 6th the full moon illuminates
this challenging aspect.
Power struggles epitomize hard
sun-Pluto angles and retrograde Mercury’s make for communication blips, if not
lies, lies and more damned lies. By Tuesday evening the moon will pass over
Pluto bringing out the full power of the sun-Pluto opposition, so we can expect
some major fireworks less than forty-eight hours before the Election. Adding
weight to this prediction is a full moon in the early hours of Wednesday
morning.
Full moons denote endings,
which is highly applicable in this case because it marks the end of a cycle of
Government but it could still pose a problem for Labour in that it could signal
the demise of its power.
I doubt that these inauspicious
aspects will be enough to end Labour’s reign of power but I do think they will
make the latter days of the election campaign far dirtier than they might
otherwise have been. Eleventh hour revelations, scandals and ferocious debates
could all result from this alignment. Of course, there could be factors other
than election dramas that reflect these stirring aspects, but my gut feeling is
that they will diminish the expected landslide victory.
In my next Cosmic Update I will look at Tony Blair’s chart but suffice to say his horoscope does not bear the stamp of a defeated man.
