Welcome to the COSMIC UPDATE

My COSMIC UPDATES are a way of looking at items and people in the news from an astrological perspective. And while I try to make the text as understandable as possible I realize that some of the astrological jargon baffles the general reader.

COSMIC UPDATE: 4th February  2002

Included in this week’s Cosmic Update:-

Well, last week I promised that I would comment on the chart of the Super Bowl and since I’m not a one to give my word lightly, here goes.

Uranus, The Super Bowl and the Winter Olympics.

A few days before the Super Bowl my sports-enthusiast husband asked me whether or not astrology could predict the winning team. Keen to oblige I set up the chart for the opening of the game.

Now, I have to confess, what I know about sport would cover the span of my thumbnail but a chart is a chart is a chart…

My eyes were immediately drawn to the presence of Uranus on the Descendant, strong in its own sign and conjunct the ruler of the Mid-heaven, Venus. At a glance I could see the game was going to produce a surprise or two. But since neither team was playing on home ground I was unable to apply my little pet theory that the home team is represented by the Ascendant, its ruler and aspects and the away team by the Descendant, ruler and its aspects. Thus in pursuit of an answer I resorted to horary astrology, using as my starting point the time my husband posed the question.

Lo and behold the Ascendant and the ruler of the chart, Mars, were in none other than Aries, the Ram. Clearly this was an ‘on’ chart in that the subject was a contest (very Aries/Mars) and the Rams were the focus of the question. However, Mars was only forming an applying aspect to Pluto (and in purist horary terms only the planets up to and including Saturn should be considered), although there was a square to the Mid-heaven. I wasn’t entirely convinced that this chart qualified as a ‘yes’ answer so I looked to the moon for support. The moon in Virgo was void of course (making no applying aspect to any planet or point) thereby supporting a ‘no’ verdict.

“No!” exclaimed my incredulous husband, “they’re the favourites!”

In fact the Rams were such hot favourites that the betting odds were five to one, which meant that if they won they would have to do so by fourteen points in order for anyone to make a cent.

Now, having said that what I know about football you could put on a pin head, I had been watching bits of the latter games of the series and it had not escaped my notice that the New England Patriots had not only put up a splendid defence in two other games where they were the underdogs but they had made some excellent pitches too.

I cannot claim to have watched the Super Bowl in its entirety, especially as by the third quarter the Rams were ahead by some seven points, but when the Patriots began to close the gap, I was hooked. In the last moments of the game the underdogs scored a touch-down, making it a decisive victory for the New England team.

And, indeed, scoring a victory for the astrology – a surprise outcome and at the last minute – very Uranian.

The Winter Olympics

The Olympics chart and that of the Super Bowl share some interesting features. The Ascendant/Descendant axis is close – a mere two degrees apart – thus Uranus is conjunct the Descendant in both cases. However, the Uranian quality of the Olympics chart is a little more pronounced in that the sun (the ruler of the chart) is making an applying conjunction to Uranus. A conjunction that will become exact during the course of the Games.

I have discussed this chart in a previous article (see January 28th Cosmic Update) but I wanted to add an extra comment here.

The opening ceremony did indeed reflect the dramatic and colourful Leo Ascendant yet perhaps the more important quality of the occasion was its strongly emotional and spiritual content. The events of September 11th have given America back its heart and soul. This was not only apparent in the highly charged rendering of The Star Spangled Banner, sung while the tautly held tattered flag from the World Trade Centre fluttered in the centre of the arena, but through the inclusion of native Indians on foot and horseback. Sometimes, to the rest of the world, America seems to be a young country, with all the brashness and insensitivity of the new, but its real roots lie deep in ancient and richly spiritual soil. The coming into a new consciousness, the awakening of the heart and soul, is a quintessentially Uranian process. Thus, the Winter Olympics is an arena in which to celebrate this awakening and reconnection every bit as much as to celebrate the extraordinary achievements of athletes from all corners of the world.

As the first week of the Winter Olympics goes by the sun, moon and Uranus will all conjoin (12th/13th ) so we should watch with interest the displays of courage, speed and skill at that time. And we should also watch for the shocks, surprises and the fireworks
