Welcome to the COSMIC UPDATE
My COSMIC UPDATES are a way
of looking at items and people in the news from an astrological perspective. And
while I try to make the text as understandable as possible I realize that some
of the astrological jargon baffles the general reader.
COSMIC UPDATE: 7th January 2002
Included
in this week’s Cosmic Update:-
Jennifer Gordon Brown - a little girl who arrived seven weeks early
This Update
was written on Sunday, 6th January but instead of revising it in
light of Monday’s tragic news, I decided to let it stand as it is.
Jennifer Gordon Brown – a little girl who
arrived seven weeks early
I have a special interest in prem’ babies. You
see I had one of my own. He is nineteen now and towering over me but when he was
born he weighed two and a half pounds (lost the half within days) and you could
hold him in just one hand. Alexander was born over three months early (I had
been pregnant for only twenty-seven weeks and five days), yet his lungs were
fully formed and he was breathing on his own within twenty-four hours. We had a
few scares – some two months later when he had been transferred from Queen
Charlotte’s hospital in London to our local nursing home he appeared to be
going into a decline and required a blood transfusion - but within a week he was
home with us, his family, and he never looked back.
And so when the Chancellor’s daughter,
Jennifer, was born on the 28th December, some seven weeks early, I
related to Gordon Brown and his wife, Sarah, as regards their happiness and
their fears.
At this point in time there is growing concern
over the little girl’s health, since she has been moved to a hospital in
Edinburgh. According to news reports, an ultra-sound scan revealed some worrying
signs and since Jennifer was delivered early because she was suffering from
intra-uterine growth restriction – a condition that is often coincident with
an irregular heart rate – at first we assumed it was her heart giving cause
for concern, however, it was later reported that she had suffered a brain
haemorrhage. As I write this update, the Chancellor and his wife are spending a
second night at the hospital, close to Jennifer.
Does a premature birth mean the baby has not got
his or her rightful chart?
Despite appearances to the contrary I am a very
practical person and I certainly have a very down to earth approach to astrology
thus I have always maintained that the moment you are born, regardless of how,
becomes your astrological signature. I mean how many babies arrive on their
expected date of delivery – neither of my other boys did, nor any of my
friend’s children. And even if the date could be accurately predicted, what
about the time? So, you have to deal with what you’ve got. Then again, if you
look at the expected date of delivery and compare it with the actual date, you
may well see some compensatory factors at work…
Let me explain. Alexander should have been born
on 3rd October; instead he arrived on the 9th July –
some three days after a lunar eclipse. Had he arrived on the 3rd
October he would have been a sun Libra, yet on the 9th of July Mars
was in Libra. And since the sun and Mars are both masculine principles, Alexander still managed to acquire a Libran
signature.
In most cases of premature births, unless, like
Alexander, they happen spontaneously, medical intervention has occurred because
there was a problem. And who is to say that an obstetrician taking such a
decision is not guided by a Higher Power?

Jennifer was born by Caesarean
Section at lunch-time on Friday, 28th December. Thus, instead of
being a sun Aquarius, she is a Capricorn. Aries rises in her chart making Mars,
the ruler, in Pisces. Now, had she arrived when expected, the moon would have
been in Aries and so would Mars. So it is clear that the spirit of this little
girl has an Arian flavour. She is a born fighter, has plenty of courage and will
be a force to be reckoned with throughout her life.
The sun in her chart is
precisely on the Mid-heaven, conjunct beautiful Venus and opposing Jupiter on
the IC. Certainly, Jennifer has been born into a loving and wealthy family
(Jupiter in the fourth) and, with the sun directly overhead, in one of the
strongest positions in a chart, she is already making a name for herself.
That Mars, the ruler of the
chart, is secreted in the twelfth house may add fuel to the fire of speculation
that she has a weak constitution but I think the current fight for life is
reflected more strongly in the ‘T’-Square involving Mars, the moon, Pluto
and Saturn. Not only this but Jennifer was born some forty-eight hours before a
lunar eclipse, all of which points to a seriously tough start to life.
Ah yes, the ubiquitous
Saturn-Pluto opposition… How many more examples of learning curves do we need!
In Jennifer’s chart the moon is tagged on to the Saturnian end of this
opposition but while the moon is separating
from Saturn, implying that the restrictions inherent in a Moon-Saturn
conjunction are less harsh, the moon is applying
to Pluto, thereby indicating – at least at this stage of her life – a life
and death struggle.
Of course, many babies are born
with moon-Pluto oppositions and most of them do not face a life and death battle
but emotionally they have chosen a tough passage for themselves. And, babies
born at this same time on this date, who, of course, have the same astrological
tools to work with, will not all be dealing with health problems but may
experience some reluctance and difficulty in adapting to the rigours and demands
of babyhood! Or more specifically the rigours and demands of dealing with
mother!
There is a strongly Capricorn
feel to Jennifer’s chart. Not only are the sun, Mercury, Venus and the
Mid-heaven in Capricorn but the moon is conjunct Saturn, the ruler of Capricorn,
which gives the moon a Capricorn quality. Sadly, I have no idea when her mother,
Sarah, was born so I cannot relate this strong Saturn-Capricorn to her chart,
all I can tell is that to Jennifer, Sarah will be a Capricorn-Saturn kind of mum
– someone who believes in discipline, emotional self-control and working hard
to achieve one’s objectives.

Now, I don’t want to get into the ins and outs
of Gordon Brown’s politics and his late-coming to marriage and fatherhood –
at least not in this Cosmic Update – I simply want to explore the chart
connections between him and his new daughter.
Aside from the shared Aries and Capricorn
features, Gordon Brown also has a moon-Pluto connection – a conjunction
as opposed to an opposition. Thus we
can see a family dynamic at work here. Moon-Pluto combinations breed a love-hate
quality to the mother-child relationship. Children with moon-Pluto aspects tend
either to adore their mother and see her as a survivor, a woman who can rule the
world and certainly their hearts and lives, or they find mother an
over-controlling, repressive person who battles with life and certainly with
them! No wonder Gordon Brown took his time before committing himself to
marriage. (Sorry, I said I wouldn’t go into this…)
Also significant, as far as the inter-aspects go,
while Gordon Brown has Jupiter at fifteen degrees of Pisces, Jennifer has her
Mars there and, of course, her father also has Mars in Pisces – and in the
twelfth house.
I can also see some resemblance in the chart
shapings of father and daughter. While Gordon Brown’s planets fulfil the brief
of a Locomotive Jennifer’s seem
nearer to a Bowl, with Jupiter just
tipping over the edge. Yet both father and daughter have clusters of planets at
opposite ends of the chart, which reflect the See-saw. As far as
interpretation goes I would speculate that both Jennifer and Gordon Brown have
the virtue of seeing both sides of an issue yet they may also suffer from
terminal inertia – rather reminiscent of the eternal Libran dilemma.
And the future?
These are worrisome days for Sarah and Gordon.
They have this beautiful little girl who may have such serious problems, that
she may not survive.
Maybe I am listening to the voice of my hopes but
I believe Jennifer is, as her chart portrays, a survivor. She may have
difficulties, she may face operations but I think she will come through. If not,
she has already made a huge difference to her parents’ lives, which may, of
course be her purpose, her destiny. If Gordon Brown was in any way reluctant to
marry and fearful of being a father, her birth has changed all that. As a couple
Sarah and Gordon will be even stronger and more committed to each other – the
experience will have reached them at a profound level – they will have shared
emotions they may previously not have known, or been reluctant to reveal.
Certainly, they will go on to have more children. Jennifer has made a huge
impact on their individual and shared destinies.
All prem’ babies are special: they come in with
a big agenda and they leave an indelible mark on those who love them and care
for them.
Sadly,
little Jennifer Brown lost her battle for life this afternoon – Monday, 7th
January, 17.20 hrs.
