Welcome to the COSMIC UPDATE
My COSMIC UPDATES are a way
of looking at items and people in the news from an astrological perspective. And
while I try to make the text as understandable as possible I realize that some
of the astrological jargon baffles the general reader.
COSMIC UPDATE: 4th February 2002
Included
in this week’s Cosmic Update:-
Only
thirty-three days into the New Year and already two violent and destructive
earth movements. (See Cosmic Update
January 21st 2002 for eruption of Mount Nyiragongo.) It is
tempting to speculate, and certainly acknowledge the inherent symbolism therein,
that the Earth itself is in revolt in tandem with the Palestinians, Al Quaeda et
al. And since the planet Uranus’s influence will increase over the next
ten or so days, we will no doubt have cause to say we live in interesting
times…
Here is
another chart for your disaster collection. On 3rd February at
precisely 09hrs 11 am in Bolvadin, Turkey, an earthquake measuring 6.00 on the
Richter scale shook the town injuring at least one hundred and fifty people and
reportedly killing thirty-five. Eight aftershocks followed, the strongest
measuring 5.3.

I have to
say that this chart does not meet the P.T. standards of relevancy. Yes, there is
a major stellium (group) of planets in
Aquarius with the personal ‘planets’ – Mercury, Venus and the sun – all
applying to a conjunction of earth-moving-and-shaking, Uranus. But I would have
preferred to find Uranus on an angle (MC/IC, Ascendant/Descendant) or a tighter
sun/Venus/Mercury/Mars connection to Uranus. However, this is what we have and
this chart bears the signature of an earthquake.
Of course,
there are some significant factors: Aries rises and Mars, the ruler of the
chart, is also in Aries and rising to the Ascendant. Thus, the violent and
incendiary nature of Mars/Aries, and especially an angular
Mars in Aries, becomes a major theme. Jupiter is square
to Mars thereby inflating the ferocity of Mars. And 11 degrees of Aries
(Mars) and 6 degrees of Cancer (Jupiter) both trigger the last eclipse at 8
degrees of Cancer/Capricorn (30th December 2001) – in fact the
mid-point of Mars/Ascendant is 7 degrees of Aries. As you may know, I consider eclipses to be harbingers of major
world events – and in an individual’s chart the portent of major life
events. Therefore one expects to find the degree area of the most recent eclipse
reflected in the chart of a powerful incident, such as a natural disaster or
some other kind of life-affecting event.
The
astrology becomes a little more interesting when you compare the chart of the
earthquake with the horoscope of Turkey.

Interesting
to note here is that Turkey became a republic as a result of a revolution,
rather than via a referendum – a point aptly reflected by the placing of
revolutionary Uranus on the Mid-heaven.
…already
in April 1920 the government in Ankara was acting autonomously – over-ruling
the Sultan – but it took until the 29th October some three years
later for the republic to be formally created.
Comparing
the quake chart with that of Turkey, most notable is the Mars connection: in the
republic chart Mars is to be found at seven degrees of Libra, almost exactly squaring
the Ascendant at seven degrees of Cancer. Thus, the Mars/Ascendant mid-point
(7 Aries) and Jupiter (7 Cancer) in the quake chart all centre on seven degrees
of the Cardinal signs, which is, of
course, within the degree area of the last eclipse.
Also
significant:
1)
Uranus in the
quake chart is precisely squaring Turkey’s
Jupiter while Venus in the quake chart is squaring
Venus in Turkey’s horoscope.
2)
Neptune is
currently squaring Turkey’s sun
3)
Pluto is
currently squaring Turkey’s MC/IC
axis
4)
Saturn is squaring
the nodal axis in Turkey’s chart and will
5)
go on to square
Turkey’s Uranus/MC/IC axis.
All these
factors listed suggest that Turkey is under a series of powerful and
transforming influences. Thus, this recent earthquake is likely to be one of
several incidents set to thrust Turkey into the international headlines.

The 36th Superbowl

On
Saturday morning my husband asked me who I thought would win the Superbowl –
and to those of you who are clueless about the Superbowl, it is the championship
match played by two American football teams (on this occasion the St Louis Rams
and the New England Patriots) which takes place annually amid feverish
excitement. I duly set up a chart for the opening of the event and was somewhat
dismayed to find an identikit chart of the Winter Olympics (see last week’s
Cosmic Update). Once again the Ascendant/Descendant axis in the third decanate
of Leo/Aquarius puts Uranus on the Descendant alongside Venus (ruler of the
Mid-heaven).
Since this
Cosmic Update will be up and running some hours after the Superbowl I will
reserve comment on the chart for now, leaving you to ponder on its contents
until my next CU.
